Horsehead fiddle is a Mongolian traditional stringed instrument and its design is closely linked to all the important cults of horse.
Significance of Morinkhuur extends beyond a musical instrument, as it is an integral part of rituals, traditions and everyday activities of the Mongolian nomads. Also it accompanies Mongolian traditional dances, long songs (Urtiin duu), mythical tales and ceremonies.
Specific notes in Mongolian Long Song are impossible to be played by piano or western musical instruments, but only by Morin khuur.
The instrument's body is trapezoid-shaped and hollow inside. It is attached to a long fretless neck, bearing a carved horse head at its extreme.
A morin khuur is identified by Unesco as one of the masterpieces of the Oral and intangible heritage of Humanity.
